Well I'm freakin' exhausted...

5 pairs of shoes
3 handbags
3 dresses and 2 outfits
5 cups of coffee
1 energy drink
copious glasses of champagne
25 bobby pins
too little sleep
too much glitter
and $800.
Thats what a weekend looks like in retrospect when you're trying to figure out where it went....
And a crippling desire for a foot massage

A fancy function indeed

I recently worked a very exclusive function, as wait staff for a small sit down affair. The client was a major Global Banking Corporation (very well known), very serious money going on.
I was quite nervous before it started as we'd been briefed that it was going to be a very formal affair, selected wines for different courses, all fine dining, when all I've done previously is finger food (with virtually no waitressing experience). The wine was served from decanters, and thank god the other guy I was working it with had previously worked at Rockpool, a classy Sydney restaurant, where they serve all their wine decanted (apparently).
They were very heavy, and I would never have been able to pour with them.

O
ne of the difficulties is that the section of the specialised venue they were in, was quite narrow, once they were seated there was absolutely no room behind them, so it was all reaching across and dow the table. Fine for the other guy, but I've got short arms! I suspect the gentlemen were quite looking forward to all the leaning (over them) actually, but thankfully I did little of it.
As the evening progressed I needn't have worried too much, basically the other guy was running the show, being much more experienced than myself, and I was there to support him. I didn't have to serve wine at all except for some initial glasses, so I stuck mainly to carrying plates and pouring water.

I
t was quite a small group though, especially when I'm more accustomed to function sizes of 100+, it was a single table, long enough to be a hassle reaching, small enough that it didn't need splitting. One of the things that interested me about the group was there was only one woman.
It was a party of executives, celebrating promotions, and I couldn't help but feel the glass ceiling must be well and truly in place. I could be wrong of course, perhaps there aren't many women pursuing Finance and Investment Banking as a career, and this woman certainly didn't look like she'd slept her way to the top.
In contrast, the organisers of the function were two lovely women in their thirties, fun, bubbly, easy on the eye, who, while not to cast aspersions in any way, could very well have slept their way there.
At the end of the day however, people are simply people. And even well-to-do, overpaid executives get rowdy when they've had too much to drink, breaking glasses, swearing too much (dropping the C-bomb!). I think it was a successful night though, there was much laughter interspersed with the "shop-talk" and even a bit of gossip.

W
e farewelled them, thanked them for their tip (which was very nice Thank You)

Well there's the haves and the have nots, and the Haves (had)
Wines served included
Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz 1980 This would have been close to $500 a bottle, and it was OFF!
Penfolds Grange 1995 - If you click through this link you'll see that the first Grange's can sell for $50K a bottle! When this was decanted the corks disintergrated, which is apparently quite common, but I'm glad the waiter was pouring it, I would have freaked out if that had been me!
2006 Noble One by De Bortoli (dessert wine) -Depending on the vintage, about $50 a bottle. I managed to snaffle a 3/4 full bottle to take home of this one...
We ran through approximately 110 wine glasses, for one function, with ONE TABLE! Thats how many wines were served, 2 wines for each of the three courses, plus Moët on arrival (with canapes). I was thoroughly sick of polishing the glasses by the end.

I'm certainly not built for full time hospitality, I was totally fagged at the end.

Cruiser Free-Verdict (well, half)

Cruiser Free, originally uploaded by dataceptionist.

Hmmm what to say?
I finally managed to find them for sale at Dan Murphy's. First off I only bought two. One in Pine Melon (left) and one Orange Mango. There is also a Mixed Berry Flavour, but I just thought it had too much potential to be vile, so I skipped it.
I only bought one in each of my two flavours, (even though they cost the earth when you do it like that, its such a rip off) because I couldn't face the thought though of them being horrid and being stuck with another three, so obviously I went in with high hopes.
So I went with Pine Melon first up. We had friends round, and we all clinked our (bottles) "cheers"! One sip- YUK.
The best way I can describe the flavour is "Midori Illusion with a chaser of Splenda"
EW! They fool you by making them pink, but they honestly taste like they should be green like Midori. Too sweet, and where was the Pine!?

Overall I shoved it down my throat, but there will be no repeat performance I'm afraid. Our friends had been kind enough to bring Guava with them, and I was so afraid of the Orange Mango I stuck to Guava for the rest of the evening.
Thumbs down I'm afraid...

Let's just say....

Let's just say your friends were having a party...

Let's just say it was an important occassion for them...

Let's just say you were involved in the planning for said party...

Let's just say there was a very nice bar you helped choose wine for...

Let's just say you didn't eat enough...

Let's just say you owe some friends an apology...

Let's just say you spent the next day in bed...

Let's just say your stomach is actually still recovering (4 days later...)...

Let's just say you won't drink like that again.....this year....

Thanks to GLH Lets just say device....

The Alcopop farce continues

Liquor industry dodges law with wino-pops
Now apparently they're going to try to get around the new tax by making WinoPops. Hmm, doesn't that sound yummy. Like a West Coast Cooler on a paddle-pop stick. Or Amy Winehouse re-inventing herself as Jessica-Simpson-esque-wholesome-fun?

I digress. They're talking about them being 8%+ !
Sweet! (I Swear I'm not an alco) They will have to be between 8-22% because that's the wine classification (I wonder where low alcohol Champagne's and Light Wine's are categorized then?).

They should have ditched the stupid tax immediately. Within weeks of the stupid tax being implemented, spirit sales went up. Yeah, because that's a better alternative, letting the twits mix their own drinks. No longer can you effectively count your drinks when you mix them yourself. M and his mate Todd have been known, on many a hard night to start out with 1 finger of bourbon in a tumbler mixed with coke, and by the end of the night they've got one finger of COKE. And they wonder why their heads are sore in the morning...

The flip side of increasing the cost of drinking, is that drugs become a more attractive option:
"If you can buy an ecstasy pill for $20, why would you buy alcohol?" Australian Hotels Association director Bill Healey said
Also, its official, I'm a binge drinker. How ridiculous, considering I can legally drive home after 3 drinks in 3.5 hours (I add the 30 minutes to be on the safe side)

The last thing I want to say on this, annoyingly I can't find the news article I read, but Rudd has hurt himself politically in Queensland also through the Alcopop tax. There is a very narrow margin they're holding there, and the tax has hit "bundy-drinkers" hard in the hip pocket.
Can anyone say, Knee-jerk Politics?

A round of Margarita's, barkeep!

Well the verdict on these, because I know you've all been waiting with bated breath.
I didn't mind them. The "Margarita" ones (right) weren't as nice as a real Margarita, like I'd had in a restaurant mere days before I drank these. But it was passable.

Especially passable (can something BE especially passable?) as a key factor in the taste of a real cocktail margarita is the salt on the rim, kind of hard to salt encrust a premix bottle, so they've somehow mixed it into the flavour of the drink. Pleasant, drinkable, I could envisage myself spending a night on them without gagging by the third bottle (I'm talking to YOU vile blue and orange WKD things).
Sierra Tequila, for those of you you aren't tequila aficionado's is the tequila that you see with the little red hat on the cap. Interestingly when I looked them up, they actually have Gold and Silver tequilas, whereas I've only really seen the Silver, and thought they didn't do gold. Personally I prefer gold to silver, which is why I usually stick to Jose Cuervo for my tequila consumption.

Anyway the "Tropic" flavour was quite nice also.
Pet Hate # 65238:
giving things stupid names that don't actually help with defining the flavour/scent/colour of something
.
"Tropic" flavour is pineapple, orange & mango juices (complete with floaty pulp stuff for authenticity), with Tequila and Triple Sec. Very pleasant, and as there was such potential for the margarita flavour to be like poison and undrinkable, I bought a single of it, and a four-pack of the "Tropic". We'll see how I go with more than one, they were equally pleasant tasting, the margarita probably more so though.

Note I only had one of each drink, as I was the Designated Driver for the evening, which brings me to the second half of my evening, my first Random Breath Test!
I find it amazing I made it to 24 before having one!
I'd only had one each of the tequila things, and at 1.1 standard drinks (Re) + a glass of red wine, Thankfully I decided not to imbibe any further at the pub(s) after dinner as we'd reached that part of the evening where we could leave anytime, and I didn't want to sit there waiting for twenty minutes for the sake of a bit of vodka.
So by the time I saw the flashing lights I was actually totally confident I would pass. I was actually more concerned about possibly running down a policeman on the way into the lineup.
Interestingly, every person of driving ability I have mentioned this to, without exception, has remarked that regardless of guilt, even if they've had nothing to drink that night, they get anxious when waved in for a RBT. I couldn't count on two hands the number of times I've been waved on that I haven't almost melted in relief, so maybe that's why I wasn't worried at all, even though I had had drinks earlier in the evening.
One of the worst parts was M was passed out in the passenger seat, which probably didn't look very good.
btw- does anyone know why they ask you if your address is current on your licence? As he waited for the reading, he casually asked if I was still at "XXX Mulberry Lane" which kind of confused me. "no, I've actually moved since then, do you have a label I might use?"

To come: My account of my only other brush with the boys in blue.

Tequila Premix -"Slammer" by Sierra

Tequila Premix, originally uploaded by dataceptionist.

Fond of tequila, fond of premix, what could be better? Found these in Dan Murphy's yesterday, think I'll try them out this weekend.

I know Reanan in a fan of the Jose Cuervo premixed drinks, Vivezo's (especially as they're 2 standard drinks) but I find them a bit...ick.

So I'll give these a try, two varieties, Tropic and Margarita!

Free! No wait, still need to pay, but not pay as in the HIPS...or thighs, or back fat...

As a drinker of the evil "alcopop" it was with interest I saw a new product on the market by the makers of Vodka Cruisers, Cruiser "Free", as in sugar free.
"Finally!" I thought! The manufacturers have caught up to the consumer demand. Long have we wanted such a product for us figure-conscious-alco's.
Personally I prefer not to drink my entire days calories on a night out, if I can avoid it. So yay for Sugar Free initiatives. (Cruisers aren't the first around however, the first ones I can think of were Archer's Spri (151 Calories in a bottle), Archer's being Schnapps. I always thought they were kind of....gross.
And of course just about anything that mixes with Coke now has a Coke Zero/sugar free version available.
So, while I've seen advertising for these new Free things, I can't actually find anywhere to buy them. I've left a message with someone called Martin at Independent Distillers for feedback on when I can expect to see them instore. Yay.
(Hilarious after I left my details with the receptionist, she inquired "what company are you from", I replied "oh nowhere, I'm just a person, wanted to drink your product"

Lets play, list the flavours. I'm a fan, but even I didn't realise there were more than ten flavours
So let's try to list them from L-R in the picture above. For a better image, try the site.
  1. Lurid Pink- This is cranberry and lime I think, and it wasn't bad from memory. I think it may have tasted a little like drinking jelly snakes though. I know one of the newer flavours did. (Or was that the horrid WKD product....?)
  2. Dark Red- ??
  3. Peachy - ???
  4. ICE. Speaks for itself.
  5. White- LEMON. Both this and ICE are just ripping off the flavour of good ole Stoli (220 calories/bottle)
  6. Yellow I - PINEAPPLE. Good, I like. I prefer a Bacardi Breezer in Pineapple though. They aren't QUITE as sweet.
  7. Yellow II -PASSIONFRUIT.
  8. Orangey - Orange??
  9. Pink- My fave, GUAVA
  10. Orange/Red - ???
  11. Red- RASPBERRY ick makes your mouth look like you knocked your teeth out.
  12. Pale Green - LEMON/LIME (I'm pretty sure)
  13. Green - MELON ick, too sickly sweet. The pineapple in a Midori splice/illusion (200 calories/bottle)balances out the overly sweetness in Melon Liqueur drink IMO.
  14. Blue- BLUEBERRY- ick. Makes your mouth blue.
I remember when I first got into premixes after High School, my favourite was Pink Grapefruit Sub Zero's. Happily, Pink Grapefruit now comes as a flavour in Breezers (190 calories/bottle). Yum. Back in those early days is was pretty much Blueberry, Raspberry and Passionfruit though. Mmm, Primary colours.....
Yay for new flavours!
So, help a girl out, what are the other flavours pictured?
Have a great weekend, I might pop home and imbibe some sugary, alcoholic calories right now.....

I don't wanna dance with somebody

Before I met my husband, I used to love dancing. In fact there was nothing I enjoyed more than a good night out dancing. I suspect one of the reasons I loved it so much was that it made me feel quite sexy, and I could pick up like that *snap fingers* when I was dancing (and did).
Of course at the time I told myself, and others, that it wasn't about picking up, it was about having fun. Ha.
Now as an old married lady, I don't go out dancing anymore. After I met my husband and we started dating I didn't need to pick up anymore, so I made a concerted effort to not go out dancing, lest I make a boo-boo. I missed it a lot initially, and if we went out and dancing was on the cards, I was there. Some of our friends are still shocked apparently at us dancing at a wedding, must have been a bit full-on. I can't remember of course, I was smashed at the time (must be why I thought it was a good idea to get down and dirty on the dancefloor in front of wedding guests).

What's weird now though, is that I don't miss dancing at all anymore, and I'm quite happy not to dance now, even when the opportunity presents. I don't even really enjoy it all that much anymore I don't think.
I sometimes kind of find it annoying almost when other girls try to (literally) drag me onto the floor (no no, they are my friends). I still have a few friends that I love to dance with when they're around, you know how some people just get your dance style and you can dance with them regardless of the song? But even so, I'm happy to dance a couple of songs, and sit down. Used to be if it had a beat, I was up. There are still certain songs I almost HAVE to get up if they come on; Yeah by Usher (always makes me think of this certain girlfriend who I used to go out with a bit), Smooth by Santana and Rob Thomas (loved this song in high school), Rock this Party (everybody dance now) by Bob Sinclar, anything by Ricky Martin (*shame*). They all get my feet tapping. Anyone else have songs like that?

Am I getting boring? Too comfy? Perhaps I'm just prudish now?
Whay happened to my love of a boogie? I wonder if its perhaps that I'd just prefer a good chat with a glass of wine in a quiet corner, rather than three shots of tequila at the bar (so you keep your hands free) and onto the dancefloor.
To say "its because you're married" I think is too dismissive, but maybe that's it?

Boozey Booze: not all sugared lolly water

I am a drinker of "alcopops" (I hate that term) or, sugary alcoholic beverages (as evidenced here and here and more here). My drink of choice mostly is Guava flavoured Vodka Cruisers. As with most drinks of this ilk, the flavour, while pleasant and delicious, bears no resemblance to real guava flavour at all.
I still like them though, and while they are high in sugar and thusly, high in calories, I would be devastated if they stopped making them.
So it was with irritation that I read Most dangerous alcoholic drinks identified included my beloved Cruisers.

The drinks targetted as baddies -
Bundaberg Rum and Cola, Kristov Vodka Cruiser Black Raspberry (a "double black" double strength version of the drink above) and Bulleit Bourbon, Woodstock Bourbon, Jager Bomb, Fairy Bomb, Haig Extra Scotch and Cola, Elevate Bomb, Hi NRG, Cougar Volt, Crazy Mexican and Pulse Red.

****Gah! Annoyingly at this point I realised I mis-read the article and my brand is number two, when I had thought it had been spared. I feel like such a tool.***

Cougar Volt is part of a move by Fosters to agree to stop producing Energy drinks with Alcohol in them. Of the twelve listed above I think 5 are energy/guarana and alcohol combinations, which I would not drink and I think energy drinks are foul.

I do think there are too many pre-mixes on the market, its a bit saturated now with disgusting products, but I hope they keep Guava Cruisers and Pink Grapefruit Bacardi Breezers (hey I like the taste, its just a happy conicidence that both those products are pink......)

I really am so over hearing about teenage binge drinking. Taking premixed drinks away from them won't stop them. They'll buy vodka and mix it with Shweppes Lemon Lime and Bitters like we did when we were 16. Where there's a will there's a way, and why should adults like me be punished and have our drinks taken away!

This Ain't a Mixtape....Right?

When I was in high school, a guy I knew and was friend with, made me a CD with all the these great songs of the nineties and older, it was awesome. I lost it for a while but I found it again the other day and I listen to it at work now. When he gave it to me, I was really appreicative, we were friends, not close, but friends. I'd only been to his place say twice, and both times in a group. Essentially I brushed it off, as his dad had the biggest CD collection I've ever seen, imagine a family room type area with floor to ceiling bookshelves full of CD's. It was incredible, his dad apparently wrote a catalogue program to keep track of all of them. He probably has them all as MP3's now, and his physical collection is redundant but it was still a big deal in school. He was a nice guy, typical of the guys I went to school with he was a little nerdy, but genuinely nice when he wasn't blowing shit up (an off shoot of under stimulated minds, even at "smart" schools)
My question now, possibly I'm overthinking it considering the first song is "Always" by Bon Jovi, and has always been a favourite of mine. But was he sweet on me and I've totally missed it until now? It was the equivalent of making a Mix Tape for someone, except its a CD and has 200 songs on it.
I never really thought about it at the time, I just accepted it and loved it. But he sat down and did that, for no return.

Am I only now just realising that I'm a complete moron, as I listen to "Love is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet??

Bring IT ON

spice up your life

Well you can't say you didn't hear it here first.
Well ok maybe you can, but as I predicted {lol}, THE SPICE GIRLS ARE REUNITING!!!!
And I for one, will be attending the Sydney leg of their tour when they come here.
BRING - IT - ON!

***i do reiterate however that I extremely surprised Posh Spice has agreed to the reunion, not quite like Robbie Williams and Take That (cold day in hell), but she's massive now. My personal theory is that she actually DOES think she can sing, and this is her outlet for that.
I speculate that she will do the tour, and then LEAVE the group, prompting the creation of "Cumin : The Search for the New Spice" the reality TV show where the contestants must create elaborate hairstyles and thigh high boots using nothing but their wits.
You heard it here first-I'm calling it***

Ooh me me me I want it

Ooh I love this dress, I absolutely now wish I owned it, in all it's beautiful fuschia glory!!! GIMME GIMME GIMME!
